What to Talk About with a Girl: 9 Topics That Never Run Dry

Running out of things to talk about is almost never a topic shortage — it's a depth problem. People change subject when a topic goes flat instead of going one layer down, and six shallow topics feel much worse than one good one. Here are nine that reliably have another layer, each with a way in and a way deeper.

Why conversations actually stall

Watch a conversation die and you'll usually see the same move: she gives a short answer, and instead of asking about that answer, the other person reaches for a completely new subject. Now she has to start from scratch again. Do that three times and it feels like an interview that neither of you wanted.

The fix is boring and it works every time: when a topic goes quiet, go down, not sideways. Every topic below is listed with the second question already written for you, because that second question is where the actual conversation lives.

01

The thing they're avoiding

Way in: "What are you supposed to be doing right now instead of this?"

One layer down: ask why it keeps getting pushed. You'll get their week, their job and their sense of humour in one answer.

02

Food, but specific

Way in: "What's your comfort food after a genuinely bad day?"

One layer down: who made it for them first. Food questions are family questions wearing a disguise.

03

Where they're from vs. where they are

Way in: "Is where you live now the kind of place you pictured living?"

One layer down: what they'd miss if they left tomorrow. Much better than "where are you from".

04

The obsession

Way in: "What have you been completely obsessed with lately — show, song, hobby, anything?"

One layer down: ask what specifically hooked them. Enthusiasm is the easiest thing in the world to be interested in.

05

Small strong opinions

Way in: "What's a hill you'll die on that nobody else cares about?"

One layer down: disagree, lightly, if you actually do. Mild friction is the fastest route to a real conversation.

06

The ten-year-old version of them

Way in: "What did you want to be when you were ten?"

One layer down: ask what happened to that plan. Warm, funny, and occasionally quite moving.

07

How they recharge

Way in: "What do you do when you need to reset?"

One layer down: ask when they last actually did it. Tells you more about someone's life than any job question.

08

Things that went sideways

Way in: "What's the worst trip / date / haircut you've survived?"

One layer down: tell yours first, and make yours the worse one. Shared disasters bond people absurdly fast.

09

What they'd do with a free year

Way in: "If a completely free year appeared, what would you actually do with it?"

One layer down: ask which part of that they could do a small version of this month. Turns a fantasy into a real conversation.

Topics to handle carefully

Not forbidden — just easy to get wrong with someone you met eight minutes ago.

  • Exes. Fine much later, terrible early. It sets the frame that this conversation is about comparison.
  • Work, as a status question. "What do you do" is fine; following up on salary, seniority or ambition is an audit.
  • Politics and religion. Not because they're boring — they're often the most interesting thing available — but because they need trust you haven't built yet.
  • Heavy personal history. If she goes there, follow. Don't lead there.

If you only remember one thing

The best topic is whatever she just got slightly more animated about. You'll hear it — the pace picks up, the sentences get longer. Stop steering and stay there. Everything on this page is a way to find that moment; none of it beats noticing it when it happens.

For the questions themselves sorted by conversation stage, see questions to ask a girl. If the trouble is the first thirty seconds rather than the topics, how to talk to girls is the better starting point, and keeping a conversation going goes deeper on the going-down-not-sideways habit.
